The Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science at the University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure track NSERC Industrial Research Chair (NSERC IRC) appointment in the general areas of Dairy Cattle Production, Nutrition or Physiology.

Building on recognized strengths at one of Canada¡¯s foremost research-intensive universities, the appointee is expected to develop a world-class research and teaching? program to support sustainable growth in the dairy sector. The program will address industry priorities and complement the current foci on cow longevity, and enhancing the quality and composition of milk in an efficient and environmentally sustainable manner. The University of Alberta, the largest research institution in the province,? offers a dynamic and exciting research and teaching environment, with access to outstanding facilities for both fundamental and applied research. Facilities include the Dairy Research and Technology Centre (DRTC) at the nearby Edmonton Research Station, which is ranked as one of Canada¡¯s premier animal and plant research facilities, as well as the state-of-the-art Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Centre and other specialized analytical laboratories on the main campus. As an NSERC IRC the successful candidate will work cooperatively with other DRTC scientists to strengthen the existing partnership involving the University of Alberta, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, University of Calgary, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and Alberta Milk. They will also develop a program that support the long term vision of the dairy industry in assuring consumers of the attributes of milk and milk production including, Safety, Quality, Traceability, Biosecurity, Animal Care and Environmental Sustainability.

Candidates must have a doctorate in dairy science/animal science, or related field with focus on nutrition, physiology, management, metabolism, or environmental impacts and provide evidence of outstanding research potential, demonstrated leadership ability, excellent communication skills and a strong track record of effective technology transfer activities. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching as well as integrated research programs that support the department¡¯s overall mission. That mission emphasizes achieving teaching and research excellence in efficient and sustainable production, processing, and utilization of safe and nutritious food to promote health, within the context of the agri-food industry. The department, with a faculty that has garnered national and international recognition, is unique in Canada because of its depth of academic expertise and its broad range of disciplines.? The department now has a total of 65 academic staff (including secondments); over 100 Research Associates, PDFs, Adjunct professors, and visiting scientists; 350 administrative/technical and Support staff. There are approximately 250 graduate students, and over 800 undergraduate students enrolled in the BSc in Agriculture, Animal Health, Nutrition & Food Science degree programs, administered at the Faculty level.?
