This position is for six (6) months from the date of hire?with a?possibility of?extension.

The Lead Software Developer works in a multidisciplinary team environment and provides continuous support to computer programming and software development needs of our ¡®Modular Construction research group. This research group is led by Dr. Mohamed Al-Hussein, professor in the department of Civil and Environmental engineering at University of Alberta and also holds a NSERC Industrial Research Chair (IRC) in the Industrialization of Building Construction. His research program focuses on industrializing and modernizing the construction process which involves transferring onsite construction activities into offsite facilities in which construction tasks can be automated, regulated, and tightly scheduled within a climate-controlled environment.

?Here is a list of software applications currently being developed by the software development team within the research group:

  • FrameX Add-in (https://tinyurl.com/y8bxojm7): An Autodesk Revit? building information modeling (BIM) software add-in, written in C#, is designed to create wood wall and floor framing in existing 3D BIM models. Future work will include expanding the current features to include light-gauge steel framing, floor load analysis, CNC instruction generation, roofing truss, piping and electrical components, sheathing generation, etc.
  • S-BEND Mobile App (https://tinyurl.com/y7dj2tky): Android/iOs application for data acquisition of sheet metal components on mobile devices, in cooperation with an industry partner.
  • iRigging: application used for suggesting smart construction-site rigging analysis to assist field personnel with safe load-distribution decision making during crane operations

?Duties

  • Design, develop, document, test, debug and maintain a variety of web, desktop and mobile software applications
  • Review, repair and maintain legacy code
  • Respond to bug reports, when deemed required
  • Communicate with various research groups, document user requirements and develop work plans
  • Lead and supervise a small team of software developer interns
  • Analyze system specifications and translate system requirements to task specifications for junior software developers
  • Coordinate and supervise the development of software systems, including planning and scheduling
  • Prepare reports, manuals and other documentation on the status, operation and maintenance of different softwares
  • Package and support deployment of releases
  • Research and evaluate a variety of software products

Qualifications

  • Bachelors (with 2+years work experience) or Master¡¯s in Computing Science (or a related field of study) with a minimum of 3.0 GPA is preferred
  • Excellent programming skills?
  • Experience in software development using C# .Net technologies
  • Strong knowledge of Object-oriented programming (OOP) principles
  • Experience with source control management systems (Git, BitBucket, SVN)
  • Experience with web development technologies including JavaScript, HTML, CSS
  • Experience with database development including relational database design, SQL
  • Experience with Android and iOS app development
  • Experience with user interface design and prototyping
  • Familiarity about CAD softwares (AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp etc.) will be an advantage
  • Internally motivated, able to work proficiently both independently and in a team environment
  • Strong initiative to find ways to improve solutions, systems, and processes
  • Strong leadership, oral communication and writing skill is a must
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills to work effectively within the team environment
